The Yellowstone
The ride in at dusk to Broadus, Mt., the “Wavingest town in the West.”
Lester Early. We stayed with his remarkably kind family just North of Broadus. His wife, Ladonna, makes a mean bowl of chili. There are five generations on their cattle ranch and Lester’s third grade granddaughter Jada runs the whole thing.
The Keystone XL pipeline
Leo, his sidekick Clancy, and his son Eric Barthelmes at the Tallow Creek School. They both attended the Tallow Creek School down the road from their ranch where they run cattle and sheep.

Nothing like a little mid-day drink from the stock tank.
Ron and Twila. two wonderful people who let us keep our horses at their corrals and helped us navigate the bustling metropolis of Boradus, MT. The Keystone XL pipeline goes right through their property.
Grinding some toe off a shoe for Lonesome, our high maintenance horse : )
Maureen and Russel Curtiss. Maureen attended the Cutting School as a girl. Her grandmother, a Cutting by marriage, founded the school when she homesteaded up the road.
Insect snowflakes while watering the horses about a 1/2 mile from camp before bed.
Bob Walden, a rancher that runs cattle near the eastern shore of Fort Peck. He makes phenomenal biscuits, ones that rival Gus Mcrae’s from Lonesome Dove, a book which Bob can quote nearly by heart.
Reata Walden
The Curtiss’s and their grandaughters, who brought us fresh water, biscuits, and lemon cookies for the road!
Healthy sage brush steppe as far as the eye can see

The Sand Arroyo Badlands
American Avocet
Dale Veseth teaching us the local grasses and talking range management.
The Sand Arroyo Badlands east of Fort Peck Lake. One place where there is still plenty of bare ground and cactus.
A wild technicolored grasshopper. In some spots you can find at least a dozen species of grasshopper within a few yards of one another. Any entomologists out there know what this little guy is?
Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia)
The Holts on Horse Ranch
Ron Stoneburg
The Stoneburg family, three generations pictured here on a sixth generation cattle ranch in the Larbe Hills. Their family homesteaded here in the early 1900’s and they’ve been working the land ever since.
Zora Holt
The finest wool you’ll find. We enjoyed a wonderful day with Linda Poole in the most beautiful home West of the 100th meridian.
